The death of Dr. Salem B. Towne occurred at his home on South Locust Street in Greencastle, Tuesday morning at 2:30 from heart trouble. His health had not been good for some time.  Dr. Towne was one of the best known in Putnam County of the various Methodist Church ministers who have been citizens of Greencastle, his term as presiding elder from 1897-1903 bringing him into close contact with all the Methodist charges in the local field.  He often preached as supply in the rural and city churches also.  Dr. Towne was a man of fine character, very likeable and very much interested at all times in the welfare of his fellowmen. The DePauw register has the following concerning his record.  AB; AM 1869; MD Chicago Medical College, Northwestern Univ; MD 1871, Bellevue Hospital Medical College; NY City; STD, 1891, DePauw University; Phi Beta Kappa.  Born 1847, Paola, Ind; Teacher of mathematics, Hamline University, Minnesota, 1868; physician and druggist, Frankfort, Ind 1871-5 entered the ministry at the Methodist Episcopal Church Northwest Indiana Conference, 1875; appointments: Argos, Dayton, Rossville; First Church, South Bend; First Church, Crawfordsville; Centenary, Terre Haute; College Avenue, Greencastle; First Church South Bend; presiding elder, Greencastle District, 1897-1903; Michigan City, 1903-04; field secretary, DePauw Univ, 1905-09; financial secretary same, 1912; financial secretary and treasurer, same 1912; member General Conference 1892 and 1900.  He was father of Miss Elinor Kirkwood Towne, Mrs. Mary Rebecca Lockwood, Salem Lockwood Towne; Lockwood Jaynes Towne; Miss Frances Towne.  The funeral of Dr. Towne will be held at the Methodist Church in Greencastle Friday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes and Dr. Monger, pastor. - kbz
